‘Joint Criminal Enterprise?’ Charles Perrottet Denies Colluding with Wife to Hide Payments

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry into alleged corruption and money laundering within the New South Wales Liberal Party has been marked by numerous twists and turns. However, none have been as egregious as Charles Perrottet’s testimony last week. The former party powerbroker’s attempts to explain away his involvement in suspicious transactions have raised more questions about his character and motivations.

Perrottet’s defense that he was merely providing “holistic” advice to Beckington, a company tied to fugitive property developer Jean Nassif, is laughable. Counsel assisting Dr Peggy Dwyer has presented evidence suggesting Perrottet was not only aware of but also actively involved in structuring invoices for his wife’s company, Macquarie Consulting. These invoices often included large bonuses and changed structure, reeking of a deliberate attempt to conceal payments made to Perrottet himself.

The fact that Perrottet did not pay income tax on these earnings and that his name does not appear on the invoice raises serious questions about the legitimacy of his actions. Dwyer’s observation that Anita Perrottet was “in effect obtaining a benefit by deception” is a damning indictment of the couple’s behavior. The notion that they were simply providing remuneration for advice rings hollow when considering the opaque nature of these transactions.

Perrottet’s claims of being unaware of transaction amounts, including the $148,000 cheque handed over to Beckington at the Longueville Hotel, have been thoroughly debunked by Dwyer. Perrottet took a photograph of the envelope containing this amount on his phone the morning after, indicating he was aware of its significance.

The real question here is not whether Perrottet colluded with his wife to hide payments but what this says about the culture of the Liberal Party and the individuals involved. The ICAC inquiry has already uncovered numerous instances of suspicious dealings, including alleged illicit donations from Nassif to the party. A thorough examination of these transactions is long overdue.

Perrottet’s testimony also raises questions about his personal integrity. His admission that he “made it up” regarding plans to help Nassif accelerate development projects and acknowledgment that some texts to Nassif included lies speak volumes about his willingness to bend the truth to suit his purposes.

The ICAC inquiry has been a long and winding road, but one thing is clear: the Perrottet couple’s involvement in these transactions has shed light on a larger issue. It’s no longer just about Jean Nassif or alleged corruption within the Liberal Party – it’s about systemic failures that allowed this behavior to flourish.

As the inquiry continues, the spotlight will remain firmly fixed on those involved, including Perrottet and his wife. The question now is what steps the party will take to address these allegations and restore public trust.
