ChatGPT’s memory feature allows the AI to recall previous conversations and use that context to inform its responses. This has both positive and negative consequences. On one hand, it enables chatbots to offer tailored advice and recommendations. For example, if you mention being a vegetarian, ChatGPT won’t suggest meat-based recipes.
However, when interactions become too nuanced, the AI can make incorrect assumptions about users’ interests or habits. If you’ve spent weeks researching how to replace a light switch, ChatGPT might assume you’re an avid DIY enthusiast. Similarly, if you’ve been browsing places to visit in a particular location for your upcoming vacation, the AI might think you live there.
The June update introduced “dreaming” – a feature where memories are flexible and edited over time. While this allows ChatGPT to refine its understanding of users, it also means the AI continually assesses what’s important for you to remember, often without your input.
This raises concerns about data control and ownership. Who gets to decide what’s remembered and what’s forgotten? Is it the user or the chatbot? If these memories become outdated or inaccurate, who is responsible?
OpenAI’s stated goals for memory are laudable: carrying forward useful context, following preferences and constraints, and staying current over time. However, in practice, this can lead to users feeling trapped by their own interactions.
For instance, if you mention your dietary restrictions or preferences in previous conversations, ChatGPT will continue to assume these details until you explicitly correct it. This creates an environment where users are hesitant to engage with the chatbot for fear of being misjudged or stereotyped.
To manage this issue, OpenAI has provided tools for users to edit and manage their memories. However, is this enough? Shouldn’t users have more agency over how their data is used?
As we continue to rely on AI-powered chatbots for everyday tasks, it’s essential to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to mitigate them. The next time you interact with ChatGPT or similar chatbots, remember that your memories are being stored and used in ways both intended and unintended.
Take control of your data by managing your memories and setting boundaries for how they’re used. But also keep in mind: even with the best intentions, AI is only as good as its programming. The future of these chatbots lies not just in their ability to remember but also in their capacity to forget – and respect users’ autonomy along the way.
