Coastal Cities Are Sinking, Not Just Rising - The Hidden Threat of Land Subsidence
The phrase “coastal cities are sinking” might evoke images of apocalyptic sea-level rise, where metropolises are consumed by waves and swallowed by the ocean. However, that’s only half the story. New research from a team of scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Tulane University reveals that in many densely populated coastal regions, the ground beneath our feet is quietly sinking – often due to human activities.
The TUM study found that people living in heavily populated coastal areas experience an average relative sea level rise of about 6 millimeters per year. This rate is nearly three times the coastline-weighted global average of 2.1 millimeters per year and almost twice the climate-driven absolute sea level rise of approximately 3.15 millimeters per year. The main culprit behind this accelerated subsidence is land subsidence, caused by a combination of factors including groundwater pumping, oil and gas extraction, sediment compaction, and natural geological processes.
In regions like Thailand and Bangladesh, population-weighted coastal averages range from roughly 7 to 10 millimeters per year – rates that may not be immediately noticeable over a single human lifetime. Yet, for millions of people living in these areas, this gradual sinking has devastating consequences. Cities with high population densities and fast economic growth rates are often the most affected.
Jakarta is one such example, where some locations are sinking by as much as 42 millimeters per year. This poses significant risks to global food security and trade routes, not just for the city’s residents. While natural factors contribute to land subsidence, groundwater use is a factor that governments and communities can directly influence.
Improved groundwater management, stricter regulation of withdrawals, or targeted recharge of aquifers can at least slow subsidence rates – as seen in Tokyo and the Harris-Galveston region of Texas. The study’s findings also raise important questions about climate change mitigation strategies: are we overlooking a critical aspect of coastal resilience by neglecting land subsidence?
By focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat sea-level rise, we risk exacerbating the very problem we’re trying to address. Addressing land subsidence requires a coordinated effort between governments, scientists, and local communities – implementing effective groundwater management policies, promoting sustainable urban development, and investing in climate-resilient infrastructure.
As we look ahead, it’s essential to recognize that coastal cities are not just being threatened by rising seas; they’re also sinking beneath our feet – often due to human activities.
