Radiation Risks in the Cockpit: A Call for Better Protection
As we fly, we often overlook the risks faced by those who pilot and attend to our flights. Research has shed light on a pressing concern that’s been hiding in plain sight: cosmic radiation exposure among aircrew members is taking a deadly toll on their health. A recent study analyzed 12.7 million deaths between 2020 and 2024 across 503 occupations, finding a stark correlation between the number of pilots and flight attendants who died from radiation-related cancers.
The study’s findings are both unsettling and unsurprising. Aircrew employees are exposed to higher levels of ionizing radiation due to frequent altitude excursions. However, this exposure seems to be translating into a disproportionate number of cancer deaths – 6.9% of flight attendants and 6.7% of pilots succumbed to these diseases, making them among the most vulnerable occupations in terms of radiation-related mortality.
Compared with nuclear technologists, who are regularly exposed to different sources of ionizing radiation, aircrew members have a significantly higher rate of radiation-related cancer deaths. Nuclear technologists have a relatively low rate – 12th percentile – suggesting that the exposure levels and risks associated with aircrew members are not merely coincidental.
Pilots, flight attendants, and their employers must take action to safeguard these employees from the hazardous effects of cosmic rays. This isn’t about installing new technology or developing fanciful solutions; it’s about implementing practical measures to limit exposure during high-altitude flights, particularly on polar and ultra-long-haul routes.
Researchers highlight several strategies that could mitigate this risk: capping cumulative annual flight hours, rotating crews off high-dose routes, adjusting assignments during pregnancy, and rerouting or descending during solar particle events. These solutions are not novel but rather common-sense approaches employed in other industries to minimize radiation exposure among workers.
The issue at hand is not just one of occupational health but also of regulatory oversight. While many countries provide dosimeters for nuclear technologists and other radiation-exposed workers, this is not the case for aircrew members. This disparity is striking given that pilots and flight attendants are among the most exposed occupations in terms of ionizing radiation.
This study should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers, airline executives, and industry regulators. It’s time to acknowledge the risks faced by aircrew members and take concrete steps to mitigate them. We owe it to these workers – who keep us safe while we travel – to provide them with the protection they need to do their jobs without putting their health at risk.
