The notion of extracting hydrogen from underground rock formations has long been touted as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to producing it from fossil fuels. The allure of natural hydrogen lies in its potential to bypass the energy-intensive processes used to produce grey hydrogen, which accounts for over 80% of global supplies. Grey hydrogen generates significant emissions equivalent to those produced by France and Indonesia combined, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). In contrast, natural hydrogen is thought to emit relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, making it an attractive option for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like transportation and steelmaking.

Chad Levesque, president of Max Power Mining, acknowledges the challenges involved in drilling for this volatile and reactive molecule. The process requires specialized techniques and considerations compared to oil and gas extraction, making it a costly endeavor. However, Levesque believes that with the right equipment and workforce, natural hydrogen can be extracted at a commercial scale.

The Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan is at the center of Max Power Mining’s efforts. This underground rock formation has shown evidence of serpentinization, a process where oxygen reacts with iron-rich rocks to produce hydrogen. The company has recorded continuous natural hydrogen readings from its second well, which was drilled over two kilometers deep. These findings are promising, but geoscientist Arnout Everts warns that rich deposits of natural hydrogen may be rare.

Everts points out that microbes can easily consume hydrogen, making it difficult to store and transport. The world’s only developed natural hydrogen site is located in Mali, where workers accidentally set fire to a well while trying to drill for water back in 1987. Since then, other discoveries have led to a surge of interest in natural hydrogen around the world, but Everts remains skeptical about the feasibility of large-scale extraction.

The challenges facing natural hydrogen are multifaceted. While it may be extracted with relatively low emissions, the process itself can be energy-intensive and costly. Furthermore, confirmed hydrogen deposits often dissolve in water, making extraction a complex task. Max Power Mining’s efforts will help shed light on the exact location, amount, and extractability of natural hydrogen at the Lawson Complex.

If natural hydrogen can be extracted at a commercial scale, it could have far-reaching consequences for the energy landscape. It would not only provide an alternative to fossil fuels but also create new opportunities for industries that rely heavily on grey hydrogen.
